Models of Nursing Informatics
1.Graves and Corcoran's model
This was formulated by Graves and Corcoran in 1989 which focus on management of information and knowledge obtained from data that support nursing service delivery through linear progression.Graves and Corcoran encouraged application of computer in nursing through multidisciplinary team approach in order to improve health care information.
2.Schwirian's Model
This was developed by Patricia Schwirian in 1986 and describes nursing informatics as a process to identify and resolve needs related to nursing information and to achieve nursing goals.The structure of this model looks similar to Maslow's hierarchy of human needs.
3.Turley's Model
This model was developed in 1996 by Turley.It connects science of nursing with informatics and comprises of three important components such as cognitive science, computer science and information science.
4.Data-Information-Knowledge Model
This model was developed by Nelson and Joos in 1989 and finally included in ANA scope and standards of Nursing Practice in 2008.This states that nursing informatics involves application of data, information and knowledge in practice of nursing care through process of complex human intelligence.
5.Benner's level of Expertise Model
This was formulated by Patricia Benner in 1984 and applied in nursing practice through modification of Dreyfus model of skill aquisition.It supports the integration of knowledge of nursing and computer among nurses at different levels such as novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficiency and expert.
