Social groups impact our lives

  • It helps in determining the social roles that we need to perform. The actions and behaviors we show are highly influenced by social groups. For instance, Religion teaches us how to conduct oneself and how to worship, etc.
  • It gives an identity- It tells what we are and what our self is. For instance, A person would consider himself American as he holds American citizenship. He would consider being American his identity.
  • It gives status- Belong to some group gives a sense of pride and status. For instance, If belonging to the ruling political party- the member will be respected. Being CEO of a famous company, influencer, or actor from Hollywood, etc gives a sense of status.
  • Cohesiveness- Being a member of groups helps in developing interpersonal relationships and create cohesiveness.

Behavior does change when we get acquainted with different social groups. This happens due to different norms, social circumstances, expectations, cultural differences etc. For instance, In groups allowed the drinking of alcohol but when person went to an outgroup party then alcohol was not permitted.
