SOCIAL NETWORKS AND SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM

The social network described according to aspects of a more structural nature (such as size, depth and complexity) as well as functional characterstics (eg., providing information , emotional support and instrumental aid). Social support is, in contrast, the amount to which an individual believes that his or her needs for information, assistance, and feedback are met. it is an important factor in the individual appraisal of a stressful situation.

AGE,GENDER AND SOCIAL NETWORKS

Age difference in network structure may reflect differing roles and responsibilities according to life stage. whereas middle aged adults are more likely to experience multiple responsibilities related to family and work, those older in years often enciunter a reduced number of competing, simultaneous demands.Social supports are gendered; that is , roles and expectations differ whether one is women or man.

In general, women tend to experience poor health yet live longer than men and are also more likely to experience poor health yet live longer than men and are also more likely to experience loss of a spouse.additionally, women have larger, more diverse social networks than men, with more people they consider very close.

Lack of social support is related to negative impacts on health oand well being, especially for older people. Having a variety of positive social supports can contribute to psychological andphysical wellness of elderly individuals. support from others can be important in reducing stress, increasing physical health and defeating psychological problems such as depression and anxiety.
