Describe four characteristics each of controlled and automatic processing. Explain how the characteristics differ between the two processes. In addition, provide two examples of a controlled skill and two examples of an automatic skill. Explain how the selected characteristics apply to your specific examples.
Introduction- Controlled processing- When we use our attention to perform any task related to cognition, we use the controlled processing.
Characteristics of controlled processing-
1- The Controlled process required our attention and decision making and problem-solving skill.
2- Controlled processes require us to think about situations and evaluation of conditions.
3- Controlled process experience difficulties to perform multitasking because they need proper attention to any task.
4- The two task condition need more attention so that the controlled process experience problems during both tasks.
Example- Driving, writing, surgery, chess playing are some example of controlled processing.
Characteristics of Automatic processing-
1- These processes take less attention and conscious efforts so that we can work for a long time easily.
2- Automatic processing help us to perform multitasking and increase our ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time.
3- The productive value of automatic processing always been less effortful than controlled processing.
4- Post consciousness automatically depends on recent conscious experience for its occurrence.
Example- Walking, swimming, piano playing, and typing are automatic processing if we developed our skills through practice.
