Write a one-page response about India’s Epics, The Bhagavad Gita??

The Bhagwat Gita is a 700 verse Hindu sacred scripture which was originally written in Sanskrit, ancient Indian language that formed a larger epic, Mahabharata, which is the largest Indian epic. It became an important part of Hindu traditions in both literature and philosophy.

The date of composition is unclear. The authorship is also unclear. It is considered to be written some where between the fifth century and the second century BCE. It is a conversation between Arjuna, a supernaturally gifted warrior who is about to go to battle and Krishna, his charioteer. The charioteer is the god Vishnu who has the taken the form of Krishna. Arjuna doubts whether he should go into battle and Krishna explains to him that he must fulfill his duty or dharma as a warrior.

Krishna explains to him the five reasons for entering inro battle. He explains to him that he will not get bad karma by taking part in the battle.

Krishna explains karma, the self, the purpose of yoga, the difference between our self and our material body, how our environment affects our consciousness, and how to attain the perfection of life.

The Gita was written during a time of important social change in India. It was a time of increased urbanization, trade activity and social conflict. It is about the search for serenity, calmness, and permanence in a world of rapid change and how to integrate spiritual values into ordinary life.

When looking at his opponents, Arjuna recognized relatives, friends and teachers. He finally decides that controlling a kingdom is not worth the blood of his loved ones. He drops his arrows and withdraws from battle.
