- Leadership expert James McGregor Burns introduced the concept of transformational leadership in his 1978 book, "Leadership." He defined transformational leadership as a process where "leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation."
Bernard M. Bass later developed the concept of transformational
leadership further. According his 1985 book, "Leadership and
Performance Beyond Expectations," this kind of leader:
Is a model of integrity and fairness.
Sets clear goals.
Has high expectations.
Encourages others.
Provides support and recognition.
Stirs the emotions of people.
Gets people to look beyond their self-interest.
Inspires people to reach for the improbable.
- Leadership is required in each aspect of life. Every person is a leader, but few people present quality skills. Some of the most appropriate features are vision, humility, courage, cooperation, strategic planning, focus, and integrity . Visionary leaders are futuristic and do not focus on the emerging challenges since they have clear and exciting ideas on where they are going. Courage makes leaders willing to take risks to achieve the pre-established goals without assurance of success. A leader must be humble and possess high integrity to bring people together. In the nursing profession, leadership is central to provision standardized services and delivering positive institutional results. Transformational leadership is one of the leadership approaches used to stimulate workers on intellectual levels and motivating them using a compelling vision. Boamah et al. revealed that transformational leadership has great impact on the workplace environment since it empowers people.
