there has been a wide uproar about the topic of racism, with chants becoming more severe now after the recent case that has happened. As sad as it is, racism is ingrained within our society and within our system in a manner that it has affected everyone in some or the other form. In order to uproot systemic racism, steps have to be taken through a bottom up uproach, as top down is not showing much of an effect. These could be as follows :
- there has to be promotion of
diversity in leadership. For a long time it has been observed that
most of the leaders or people at the top position are of a single
ethnicity. More specifically white males. There are only a very few
examples where people from diverse ethnicities are seen, only 3.2%
of blacks people have been seen to be at roles of senior
leadership. And less than 2% people are from other ethnicities.
Hence, in order to see equity in reality, people of colour require
to be promoted and given the chance to showcase their
skills.
- it is important to continue with the topic. Most hue and cry is seen when there is an event that goes around and when the media puts all its efforts to make people realise that racism exists. As these dialogues die down, the thoughts die down as well. And people resort to their old practices. It is important to realise that just because the media stops talking about the topic, it has vanished from the planet. Also, there have to be workshops and seminars on a regular basis to train the staff and the organisation about how such practices affect people of colour. Hence, sensitivity has to be maintained even after media stops highlighting.
