by analyzing a significant event that occurred as a result of safety or health hazards in a workplace or school setting.
answer the following:
I use to work as Human Resource Manager for a manufacturing plant of Consumer Goods Company. There was a safety incident at plant while material unloading. The truck driver while parking did not pay attention and smashed the person. Although, it did not result in fatality, the person got seriously injured and had to be hospitalized.
The incident was significant to me as it was a first major accident in the plant. As a plant Human Resource Manager, I considered it as my responsibility to ensure safety of all personnel working in the premise. The accident highlighted the gap in existing processes which may even lead to fatality in future
The issue that surfaced as a result of this experience was lapse in procedure and management practices. The truck driver while entering the plant was not provided training on visuals inside the plant and key information like sign boards, speed limit etc. As per process, there was suppose to be a security guard with every truck to help them park the vehicle. So, it was carelessness on part of gate security team to not follow due process of providing training to driver. Also, security guard did not accompany the truck which led to accident.
As a HRM professional, the incident will influence my future behavior in regard to review of the process on regular basis and carrying out assessment. Entire plant team and security team were made aware about the accident with the reasons. The security personnel responsible for the issue were transferred to other work. Training plan was made for refresher in every quarter. The reflector light and mirrors were installed in the parking area for safety of people.
So, it was a major accident which made me realize the importance of safety of an individual.
