In: Operations Management
The objective is to design a local area network for a real or hypothetical organization of at least four subnets, with at least 100 PCs in each, using Windows and TCP/IP.
hardware design: Include the following in a table: part name, description, supplier, unit cost, extended cost. Assume that all PCs were bought with NICs (do not include their costs), but no cables. Compute the total cost for all parts. Do not forget the internetworking device(s). I just need help with Preparing a graphical representation (image) of the network using MS Visio. Im not sure how to do this part.

NETWORK DESIGN
Determine how many Windows servers you will need. Assume that you will buy new machine(s) to house the Windows server(s), configure and price it (them). If you used routers (not required) remember that they do not allow broadcast among subnets, what may affect this decision. Decide what services to install: DNS, DHCP, etc. Explain and justify your decisions.
Answer:
I need 1 window server to connect 100 PCs. The cost of server usually $5000 to $6000. DNS/DHCP services can be installed as an optional service during the NetWare 6.5 installation routine. It can also be installed as a post-installation task through iManager. When you install DNS/DHCP services as an optional product during the server installation, the eDirectory schema is extended to support a variety of DNS and DHCP-related object. These object help keep track of IP addresses, DNS and DHCP servers, configurations, host addresses, zones, and the like.
With DNS/DHCP services installed on the network, an IP client can establish a connect with the network by leasing an IP address from a pool of available addresses, rather than requiring that the workstation be assigned a fixed address individually. This makes IP address management much easier.
Once connect to the network, the IP client can automatically detect available DNS name serves, through which it can translate domain names – for example, novell into its corresponding IP address ( for example, 1337.65. 168.1). This enables the client to communicate with the server properly. Domain names are a benefit to the human users of computers, not the computer themselves. All DNS/DHCP configuration and management is handled through iManager.
VLANs work like subnets, but keep in mind that they are not actual subnets. VLANs are created by switches. Subnets are created by IP address and subnet mask assignments. It protect against broadcast storms (floods of unwanted broadcast network traffic).
Describe how each machine will be named (you can make it whatever you want) and how IP addresses will be assigned to each machine and how name resolution will take place. Assume that there will be only one Internet domain assigned -- test.org to the company you are designing the network.
Answer:
The default settings enable all the machines connecting to the AirPort network to share the base station’s internet account. By default, the base station providers IP address to each machine dynamically and uses NAT protection to isolate the IP addresses of each machine from the connation to the internet. To choose this option, click the “Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)” radio button. Then select the range of address that should be assigned to each device on the network using the pop-up menu. In most cases, the “Use 10.0.1.1 addressing” option will work, but you can choose a different range if you want to.
If you want to use a specific set of IP addresses, check the “Share range of IP addresses (using only DHCP)” check box and enter the starting and enabling IP numbers you want to assign. As machines connect o you network, these IP address are assigned to each machine that connects (you have to have enough address in the range so one is available for each machine. Use the “DHCP lease” box and pop-up menu to set the number of hours for the DHCP lease on each machine. When this time passes, a new address is assigned to each machine. You can enter a DHCP lease message in the Message box.
Name resolution techniques ranging from the single LMHOSTS files to the Windows Internet Name service (WINS) for NETBIOS names and HOSTS files and the Domain Name System (DNS) service for IP names. For most networks, such as those that have UNIX, Linux, or Window computers, the name resolution method works different. However, ads a whole new dimension to name resolution. The active directory stores objects that can represent everything from a user account to a resource on the network, such as a computer or printer. In a similar fashion, Novell Directory Services – NDS, now called the eDirectory – is a directory-based solution for locating resources on the network. If you employee Window 2000 Servers resource.
