In simple words, life expectancy is an estimate of how long a person would live. It is a statistical measure based on the year of birth, age, demographic factors, etc. Other factors which influence life expectancy around the world are public health, medical care and diet. Economic circumstances also affect life expectancy. The wealthy areas around the world have a higher life expectancy than the poor areas.
Women do have a higher life expectancy rate, even though the gap is now decreasing. But still, right from the female foetus to oldage, women have shown longer life. The reasons for this could be:
1) Traditional sociology-environmental factors argue that women consume less tobacco, alcohol and drugs thereby saving themselves from fatal diseases.
2) Again, the traditional society had the males as the breadwinners and the females as the home makers. Due to this, men were prone to more major accidents and risks of life as they were the ones going out of the house and working for the family's living.
3) Some schools of thought also argue the general mammal rule to be true in case of human beings too. The rule is, larger individuals tend to have shorter lives. This is because women have more resistence to infections and degenerative diseases.
