1. Write a descriptive essay on Racism within 300 words.
Racism refers to the actions, practices or views reflecting the belief that humans divide according to race, and that races share particular attributes, which make them superior, inferior, or more or less desirable.
Prejudice, however, refers to random decision-making without finding out the relevant facts about something or someone. It usually leads to a preconceived judgment towards something or someone because of gender, age, social class, religion, sexuality, language or nationality.
Racism and prejudice have several negative impacts on the society. Prejudice attitudes result in racism and hatred towards people who differ from the majority. In most societies, racism remains a silent code that is less spoken about but is felt far and wide. The feeling of being treated as a minority in most societies because of race, for instance, has a great impact on young generation.
Teenagers find themselves in an environment which they feel they do not refer to. Moreover, at this sensitive stage of their lives, they get the urge to act like others, which in turn creates a sense of resentment within them and promotes a low self-esteem as well. Such conditions have a negative influence on their growth and further development as personalities.
Racism separates people from their neighbors and friends. As a result, instead of having a peaceful neighborhood where people have a good relationship among each other, they spend time fighting and tearing each other apart with words and abusive actions. Such situation breeds hatred among the members of a particular community destroying its cohesion. Thus, people become distant from one another.
People will tend to separate themselves even in social places and social gatherings. This form of division leaves the society paralyzed and promotes a sense of insecurity as well. Furthermore, it forces some people to leave the places they have grown up in search of more accepting societies.
It is obvious that upbringing plays a major role in promoting both racism and prejudice. At a very tender age, children tend to play with each other and love each other without any reservations or concerns about their differences. However, as children grow older they start moving towards those who look or talk more like them. Such a behavior can be generally attributed to the influence and teaching of adults.
Racism propagates the unearned privileges of some people, while enforcing the undeserved restrictions on others. People should speak up against racism and try to understand each other’s ways of life and reasons of behaving differently that may seem peculiar to others. Without racism, each and every person would make a contribution to the society as well as explore their abilities.
