TRANSFORMING NURSING CURRICULA FOR GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Abstract:

In order to provide an equitable care and universal health coverage, the nursing education should be prepare the nurses and midwives for broader responsibilities in providing health care globally. This article is based on the study done in Columbia university school of nursing, New York. The main aim of the study was to implement a vibrant approach to curriculum transformation which developed a new course with a program of global clinical experiences to expand student learning experience in global health.

The planning phase of research included framing learning objectives, developing support within the school, choosing of appropriate site for the study, selection and preparing of the student group who would participate in the study, developing criteria for evaluation. The sample group consist of 24 student who were posted in five different sites for six weeks. The study showed that students gained varied clinical experience with new learnings in the midst of health disparities.The student also agreed to chose a global experience again. This innovation helps for transformation of nursing education which includes deep understanding of health disparities and nursing role in different health system. This opens a door for new challenges.

The research findings supports the conclusion and the best practice. Within different countries of the world the curriculum of nursing education is different. There exists great disparities in health care system. The health care should be universal and should be equally accessible to all. This calls for the need for a global experience of health care for nurses and midwives. Thus, the curriculum of nursing education should be globalized. This will not only provide a varied clinical experience but will also help to understand the health disparities and serve accordingly.
