What is the average percentage of time that construction workers and productive according to James Adrian (2004)?
According to the common definition of the productivity ,it is the ratio of the unit of work place and man hour of effort .And since the man hour effort is in the denominator so the only way to increase the productivity is to work harder, but there are many ways to increase the productivity without working harder rather than working smarter ,that is what explained by the Prof. James Adrian .
As per the above definition ,it was measured by United State Department of Commerce that the productivity in the construction industries was increased by less that 1% in the last 10 year .The first attention for this type of affect was went to the composition of eight hour work in a construction day .But the studies at the job site ,performed by Prof.James Adrian explain the reason for this flat productivity,he explain that 40%-60% of a typical construction day is non productive or in the other word the average percentage of productive time is only 50% .And further he explain that how this large percentage of nonproductive work associates, first worker waiting for instruction, second non presence of supervisor at work site, third handling of material by worker, fourth storage of construction material at effective location from non effective location by labour ,and likewise there are many reason which support nonproductivity.
so from the above explanation it can be concluded that the average percentage of time for the productivity is only 50% ,as explained by Prof.James L Adrian in his book ''Construction Productivity Measurement and Improvement '' in 2004.
