Healthy eating and proper nutrition are important during all the stages of life and are especially vital during adolescence. Young people need the most calories during adolescence when they are rapidly growing and developing. Carbs, proteins and fats all play important roles in a teen’s diet. Carbs are the main energy source in teens and they aid to keep the blood sugar levels under control. Proteins contribute to healthy organ and muscle growth and development and are thus required in most teens’ diets. Healthy dietary fats promote proper skin and hair development and help teens absorb other essential vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients, including calcium and iron, are important for teen’s health. For example; iron-deficient students are at an academic disadvantage and improve cognitively after undergoing iron therapy. Sleeping is required for the teens as most teenagers need exactly 9 ¼ hours of sleep for immunological healing of the body. Regular exercise in teens improves immunity, cardiovascular capacity-stamina, reduces stress, regulates body weight, improves flexibility in muscle, and, reduces the risk of heart problem, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. in later years of life.
