Discuss the difference between power and authority and explore the characteristics of power in organisations and how it might be enhanced.
Although related but power and authority are two distinct concepts. Some of the basic differences between power and authority are as follows:
Authority | Power |
Authority comprises of duties and responsibilities that are assigned to position holder. |
Power is a ownership of authority that helps in influencing the behaviour and action of others. |
Authority is a primary source of power. |
Authority can be reinforced by power. |
Example: A general Manager in a manufacturing plant can order a change in working pattern of an employee, he has the authority to do so. |
Example: A manager in an R&D of a pharmaceutical company can use his knowledge to influence the action of other employees. He has the power of knowledge. |
The characteristics of power in organization:
These characteristics can be enhanced by providing proper training and environment to support these. This will in turn enhance the power within an organization.
