Improving job characteristics can improve work motivation in several ways and for this purpose a model is there which is known as Job characteristic model. Earlier in the 20th century,jobs has been systematised nad simplified to increase productivity and maximize production ,Job characteristic theory came about because the intended benefits of increased systemization often never materialized because of increased employee dissatisfaction. It works as a job design, where the emphasis is on shaping a role to satisfy the needs of both the organisation and the individual.

This theory consist of 5 core job characteristics which leads to 3 psychological state which in turn lead to 4 outcomes.

Characteristics are :-

1-skill variety- if job is more skillful and not repetitive then employee feels that they are doing more meaningful work.

2-task identity- it mainly focuses on outcome of the work if an employee can have a feel of the finished product or output he/she will find his/her work more meaningful.

3-Task significance- it refers to the impact the task is having if it's for the organisation or for the whole society then it will motivate eventually.

4- Autonomy- it's realted to the degree of freedom to take decision and it eventually makes the employee more responsible as he started treating it as his own responsibility. .

5- Feedback- it's important to praise the employee when they are doing good ,it eventually boost their self esteem and keep them motivated.
