Reflecting on what you have learned in this class, what do you think are 5 challenges that corporate and executive level leadership may come across, as it relates to diversity policy and procedures in an organization?
Define “Diversity Audit”. What does a diversity audit entail? How might a diversity audit positively or negatively shape an organization’s strategy?
Choose an organization (either your current employer or a company of your choosing). What is the organization’s diversity policy? Do you have any recommendations for amending the diversity policy?
Utilizing the Internet, identify the difference between ‘traditional’ and ‘non-traditional’ organizational structures. How does diversity play a role in each of these types of organizations?
1. The top corporates and executive level management face many challenges in the organization as they are responsible for framing and implementing broad strategies and corporate plans which is not easy. They are the leadership face of the organization and their behaviour give both positive and negative sign to the working of the organization. Top 5 challenges faced by the are-
A. Developing the managerial effectiveness- Effective leaders should develop skills like – time management, strategic thinking and decision making as well more responsibility towards the job.
B. Inspiring employees and others- It’s a very challenging job to keep the employees motivated and inspiring for work. It requires mentoring and proper coaching of employees which is a main challenge for the senior management.
C. Leading a Big Team – Its always challenging to lead and mange big teams. The top and executive level management face challenges on how to help, support and manage a big team.
D. Implementing Change- Business environment is dynamic and requires changes in policies but changes are not easy to implement. Different employees react differently to change and some don’t even want to change which is trouble for senior management.
E. Managing external environment- Manging external world and criticism is very difficult. Senior managers deal with external world which is very challenging.
2. The current organization I am working with is a business council. Company has a very good diversity policy for its employees. Organization is committed for dedicated policies for employee benefits which feel them more motivated and creating more opportunities for advancement. Organization is working continuously to remove the barriers come in the recruitment as well as retention issues. Having good policies for women and safety as well as separate work policies for physical handicapped employees. My only suggestion is that company should ask employee and engage them or take their concerns also while making the policies for better results.
3. Traditional organizational structures is based on hierarchical structure where power flows from top to bottom and departmentalization of employees. Chain of command is followed and only senior level mangers enjoys most of the decision making power. While in non-traditional structure it is a flat structure where information is boundary less and open communication is encouraged. It is more flexible and employees are given more freedom to take their decisions. Diversity is encouraged in modern or non-traditional organizations as they are more concerned about employee development whereas in traditional structures not much attention is given to employee freedom.
