The short story "A Hunger Artist" was written by Franz Kafka. A
hungry artist monitors the death of a marginalized and vulnerable
person in the community, single death, asceticism, art and the
failure of human relationships. The story begins with the general
description of the artist. An appetite artist is often read as an
allegory. The experience of the hungry artist in this story
represents the experiences of many artists. They are loyal to their
work and the public spaces struggle with the value of what they do.
In this story the artist wants to challenge himself and try his own
physical boundaries. The whole point of his fast is to keep its
integrity. Beyond that, circus management is more concerned about
the impact on the fasting crowd. They do not care if the artist's
fast is real or imagined. It only cares when it attracts
crowds.
The story has also received some criticism. Many who define it
argue that this is a hypothetical. But they disagree on what it
represents. Some question the purity of a hungry artist. In support
of this view, they emphasize the immorality of the artist, the
fasting period and religious significance. There are many
limitations to this story. Although it has some limitations, it
does deliver messages. We get a picture of how an artist is
connected to society.
