Name, define, and explain the three barriers to effective communication. Your post should be substantial, and all key terms and concepts should be defined and elaborated upon. Then, explain which barrier you think is the most problematic, and why you think it is the most problematic.
Communication is a process through which meaning is conveyed and comprehended. The smooth flow of communication between the sender and the recipient is however hindered by certain barriers.
Some of the prominent barriers that affect effective communication are as follows:
It is more prevalent when there are status differences and vertical levels of hierarchy present such as in an organization.
For instance, a subordinate telling his or her superior what he assumes the superior wants to hear and not the actual reality.
For example, people in a positive state of mind tend to get persuaded by stronger arguments, whereas individuals in negative moods are likely to overlook rational arguments and get swayed by emotional appeals.
Since words have literal and figurative meaning, it is important to know the context and situations in which they are used.
Though all the above-mentioned barriers can have adverse implications, strong emotions are likely to be the most problematic of all. Under the influence of emotions, many individuals tend to misperceive the message conveyed and selectively perceive aspects of the situation which not only impedes smooth communication but also can lead to harmful consequences.
