Beyond possible human error and tragedy responsibilities, what do you think of this situation from the perspective of managing communication? - Costa Concordia
I strongly believe that the situation could have been managed effectively through efficient risk and disaster management plans. They could also have handled the communications after the crisis more efficiently. Beyond human error and tragedy responsibilities, if only the captain has informed appropriately to his team members, then they could have arrived at better solutions rather than his denial to come on-board and neglect the sinking ship. The captain would not also abandon the ship Costa Concordia initially without any plan of rescue. Additionally, the communications was not managed effectively. There was no effective crisis management. They had shut down all social media activities as a sign to show respect for the victims and also to avoid any negative comments. This has resulted in bad reputation for the company as they were silent on the social media comments. Thus, the company should have managed the communication effectively during and after the crisis which would have saved the lives of the passengers.
