Describe the career management activities in an organization you are familiar with. Comment on the effectiveness of these activities and the perception of the organization’s employees on their effectiveness.
The career management activities in my previous organization included new hire training programs including training on company policies and skill development. The newly hired employees are given induction program about the company, people, its hierarchy and the workplace rules to follow. The new employees are provided with necessary training including both communication and technical skill training that will help them to perform their job. Later the employees are provided with on-the-job training in the floor on how to perform their job responsibilities. Other career management includes leadership training, communication skill development and other trainings related to stress management, wellness programs and training related to workplace safety. Leadership training programs are conducted by the senior managers in the organization. The employee wellness and stress management programs are conducted by external agencies. Employees are given training on workplace safety including fire safety and how to use emergency doors. The company also provides skill training programs yearly that help an employee to learn new skills and move to another role.
The new hire training programs are considered most effective by the employees and other career management programs are not utilized by the employees effectively. OJT is very effective on performing the job responsibilities and leadership program effectiveness depends on the instructor. Some of the instructors are very much effective in training the employees but some are least effective though they have good experience as a senior manager. Employees consider the program as effective only if it is both interesting and informative. The wellness programs and stress management programs are not utilized by all the employees and most of them prefer not to attend such programs as they are not aware of the benefits. They find the programs as ineffective in making any changes to their work pressure. The safety programs are conducted on routine basis but a few employees actively participates in the program, others do not even listen. The employees perceive the program as effective only when they are aware of the benefits and the organization fails most of the time to effectively communicate the benefits.
