ANSWER
:
Hyperpersonal communication, according to Walther, is "more
socially desirable than we tend to experience in parallel FtF
interaction" (p. 17). The hyperpersonal effect suggests that
multiple amalgamation of social medias, may incite the CMC
[Computer-Mediated-Communication] to become highly personal and
stimulate the higher level of self-disclosure.
1. HYPERPERSONAL IS GOOD IN SOCIAL
MEDIA :
- The Computer-mediated-communication (CMC) has major effects on
interpersonal behaviour and communications. It also enhances the
personal relations and the results of CMC aree seen to stimulate
the higher level of self revelation.
- Walther argues that the users of CMC do indulge in
Hyperpersonal interaction. The people who are socially introvert
can indulge in self revelation without a face-to-face interaction,
which is more comfortable for them.
- The communicators have the oppurtunity to select, edit and
construct the informations they want to be presented on the social
media. The self-presentation can be strategized due to the timelap
between the construction and dispachment of a message.
- This selective self presentation enhances and motivates the
communicators to specify their positive qualities and omit the
negative ones.
- The online interaction enhances the self esteem as it is not a
compulsion for people to present their actual self on social media,
rather they can carefully select the information and present an
idealized self which may be more socially acceptable and
liked.
- Hence, there are a number of advantages of
Computer-mediated-communication over the traditional face-to-face
communication.
2. HYPERPERSONAL IS BAD IN
SOCIALMEDIA :
- The computer-mediated-communication has replaced the old
face-to-face interaction which is also an important way of
communicating. As, the communication in FTF invoves a better
understanding of body language, expressions, tone etc, which goes
missing in the CMC.
- As the communication becomes selective on social media, the
idealized self of people is seen and not their actual self. People
tend to provide only the information that seems positive but which
may not be real about them.
- To facilitate the desired relationship and response, the
self-presentation is exploited and the self is presented in a
manner which is more socially acceptable but may not be actually
true. Hence, people tend to hide their real qualities.
- Hyperpersonal relation is bad because we may attain a lot of
information about each other but we may not even know each other in
real lives.
- Sometimes, people are easily able to trust any stranger due to
similiarity seen on social media. But the fact cannot be ignored
that this similarity is based on a selected information by
them.
Hence, the hyperpersonal effect on the platform of social media
has both advantages and disadvantages.
