1. Familial Mediterranean fever is an autosomal recessive condition, with high carrier frequencies known for multiple ethnicities: Armenian 1 in 8 Ashkenazi Jewish 1 in 13 Sephardic Jewish 1 in 14 Turkish 1 in 8 What are the chances of an Armenian man and a Sephardic Jewish woman having a baby who is affected with this condition?
This is a simple question which can be directly solved by Hardy-Weinberg Equation, which states p2 + q2 + 2pq = 1
The methodology to solve the problem is as follows :
Now, we find the Probability of 2 carriers having an affected baby :
Now finally, the Risk of Child being affected can be calculated as :
Probability = (Carrier status of man) x (Carrier status of woman) x (Probability of 2 carriers having an affected baby)
= 0.4570 x 0.3916 x 0.25
= 0.04474
