1. you are evaluating autosomal recessive condition A (alleles A and a) and B (alleles B and b) which you hypothesize are on different chromosomes. You are given 7 wildtype (homozygous dominant) female flies and 7 male flies that are homozygous recessive. What genotypic ratio would you expect in the F1 generation produced?

2. you mate the F1 females with males that are homozygous recessive for both disease A and B to produce an F2 generation. What phenotypic ratio would you expect in the F2 generation? what is this experiment called?

3. what molecule do you evaluate with a polyacrylamide gel?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Mating a yellow bodies female with a wild type male, then must be certain that the female has not mated with any other males besides wild type males. Because females can store sperm for weeks after a single mating, it is important to isolate females before they have had the opportunity to mate. After mature pupae are present in the culture contaning the females of interest, clear all adult flies from the vial by trapping them into a clean, dry vial with a foam plug.

The simplest type of cross is the monohybrid beacause it involves just one pair of allels. A typical monohybrid cross with fruit flies might pair homozygous male with homozygous recesssive, vestigial windged females.or generation.

3. Inqulab-91 and Rawal-87 were evaluated for analysis of variability in speed storage proteins by using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Electrophorogram for each variety were scored and presence or absence of each bond noted and was entered in a binary data matrix.

Based on the data of SDS-PAGE gels cluster analysis was performed to check the variations among varieties. The overall result shows low degree of heterogenesity however different varieties reveal differential protein banding pattern. It is concluded that SDS-PAGE analysis of wheat endosperm protein is useful for evaluation of genetic variability and cultivars identification that help in wheat breeding program.

(1) Haemochromatosis is a mild autosomal recessive condition. Approximately 1 in 200 Australians have the condition, and approximately 1 in 7 Australians are carriers. Jane is planning on starting a family, and does not have haemochromatosis, though her mother is affected with the condition. Her father is not affected, and is not a carrier. Jane’s partner Steve does not have the condition either, but his father is a carrier (his mother is not a carrier). (a) What are the chances...

1. A woman is affected with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, an autosomal recessive condition with a carrier frequency of 1 in 13. As they are planning on having children, her partner undergoes carrier testing for the condition. The result was negative, indicating that he was not found to be a carrier. The reported sensitivity of the carrier testing is 95%. What is the chance that their first child will be affected with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency?

The pedigree from Parts A and B is shown below. Now it shows the inheritance of a rare recessive autosomal condition that affects individuals II-3, IV-2, IV-5, and V-3 (denoted by the filled symbols and the genotype aa). Individuals I-1, I-2, I-5, and I-6 have no history of this condition in their families.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive genetic condition due to mutations in the MEFV gene that encodes pyrin, a protein that functions in the immune inflammatory response. Alkaptonuria is an uncommon autosomal recessive condition. Sara and James had never heard of alkaptonuria, and were shocked when their first child was born with the condition. Sara’s sister, Mary, and her husband, Frank, are also planning to have a family. Mary and Frank are concerned about the possibility of alkaptonuria affecting their children. The four adults (Sara, James, Mary, and Frank) seek the advice of a neighbor who is a retired physician. After discussing the family histories, the neighbour...
