Expert Solution

MDI is metered dose inhaler which is a device used to deliver medications in to the respiratory tract for patients with known respiratory disease with airway obstruction. Spacer is a tube that is attached to MDI to increase the length of MDI from the mouth piece so that the medication delivery can be enhanced in to the lower respiratory tract. The advantages of spacer in MDI are

1.increase the medication delivery to the lower airway

2.reduces the candidiasis or oral thrush

3.reduces the incidence of hoarseness.

4.it can be used to patients with poor hand mouth coordination.

Indications

Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Spacer flow rate ranges from 15L/mt to 30 L/mt.

FiO2 of the spacer depends on to which device the MDI is connected. If it is connected with the O2 mask it ranges from 40% to 100% and for ventilator is is 100%
