The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

What does Dr. Dan Murphy mean when he states: "When you fail one Hmong patient, you fail the whole community"

Solutions

Expert Solution

By the statement Dr. dan Murphy meant closeness of Hmong among themselves.

The Hmong people had a strong bond among themselves. The Hmong community are very close to one another and they follow their culture and common belief system seriously. Unfortunate incidents of Lia made a feeling of mistrust towards the doctors throughout the community. The fact that doctors took Lia from Fao and Nao Kao made them feel doctors disregarded their culture and belief system. Here bad experience of one personb resulted in whole community losing their trust towards the doctors.  This incidence confirmed the Hmong communitys worst prejudices about the medical profession and the medical communitys worst prejudices about the Hmongs. American doctors are focused only on fixing the problems, completely avoiding the cultural etiquette iof Hmongs. On the other hand, Hmong people had who already had bad notions towards doctors, Lia's incident reinforced their prejudice.
