The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
Discuss the Lees' life in Laos. How was it different from their life in the United States?
The Lees’ in Laos were farmers who worked independently and managed to for centuries. They practiced swiden farming , they grew there's food and opium to earn there living. But after they shifted to united states they lost there's self dependency, there traditional farming practices and medium to earn the living. There was difference of culture in united states they found it difficult to adapt with that. They lost the self sufficiency and live off the government and enabled them to support themselves like they were used to in Laos. They lost there pride and self respect. They in Laos were used to living in their own hand-crafted homes which they made according to there comfort but in states forced to live in low income housing with appliances that they had never seen in their lives before.. They had thought that their life in America would be accepting and provide them a better life than that of the war taking place; however, they were greeted with ignorance and disrespect. They were running from fear and war; however, they basically found worse in the United States, although they hoped for better.
