What kind of glass do you get if you melt the following raw material mixes? (Niter, Barit, Nefeline,)
the glasses have it's application everywhere. glasses are used in the making of buildings, utensils, etc.
the process of making glass is of two types:
1.Melting & Refining.
2.Float Bath
3.Coating (for making reflective glasses)
4.Annealing
5.Inspection
6.Cutting to Order
each method has different process.
the types of glasses made and its composition are shown in this image:
in this problem we have to find out which type of the glass we will get if we mix the niter, barite and nepheline.
first of all we need to know that the niter is KNO3 , which is the source if introducing potassium to the glass, the other source of potassium is K2O. the nitrate increases the expansion of the glass.
the Barite is the source is Barium (Ba) to the glass, the other source of barium is BaO. Barium increases the crystallization and density of the glass.
the nepheline is an aluminosilicate. which is the main material for making glass.
hence form the image of the composition we can see that
only opal glass has the Ba added to it along with potassium.
opal glass has the composition of 1.6 mass% Ba and 2.2 mass% K.
so,
when the niter, barite and nepheline are mixed we get an opal glass.
