2.Would you consider the 5% NaCl solution to be hyper- or hypo-osmotic with respect to the cytoplasm of the cell?
Ans 1) Hypo-osmotic environment means that the environment is having a lower solute concentration. Water molecules always move from a region with lower solute concentration (i.e, higher water potential) to a region with higher solute concentration (i.e, lower water potential) and this process is called osmosis.
If a plant cell is placed in a hypo-osmotic environment, then water will move inside the plant cell by osmosis and the cell would swell and become turgid. But in the plant cell, the cell wall is rigid and withstand the turgor pressure developed due to the osmotic inflow of the water and so, the cell wall helps the cell from bursting.
Ans 2) Hyper osmotic solution is the one with higher solute concentration and the hypo-osmotic solution is the one with lower solute concentration.
The concentration of NaCl within the cell is about 0.9% and any NaCl concentration higher than this would be hyperosmotic to the cell and any concentration lower than this would be hypo-osmotic to the cell.
So, 5% NaCl solution is hyperosmotic with respect to the cytoplasm of the cell.
