Describe the effects of aging on life satisfaction and cognition.

Overall happiness and satisfaction with life tend to increase with age, but a person's overall level of well-being depends on when he or she was born. People in the same “birth cohort” — born around the same time — may have had unique experiences that shape the way they evaluate happiness and optimism.

Measurable changes in cognition occur with normal aging. Age-related diseases accelerate the rate of neuronal dysfunction, neuronal loss, and cognitive decline, with many persons developing cognitive impairments severe enough to impair their everyday functional abilities due to dementia. Some cognitive abilities, such as vocabulary, are resilient to brain aging and may even improve with age. Other abilities, such as conceptual reasoning, memory, and processing speed, decline gradually over time.

Explain how these effects show developments marked by stability or change.

These effects such as satisfaction with life with aging, and more mature reasoning, belief with aging as well as decline in certain cognitive abilities as described above lead to stability of an individual. For example, it is generally found that aged people resist to take risks associated with a change. So, in other words, they seek stability in life.
