How can people skills be learned?
People skills can be learned through training and can be developed over time for an individual.
Example: there are various courses like feedback, leadership etc which provides a direction. However, they have to brush every time with experience.
Once learned, do they last?
People skills once learned will only last if they are implemented regularly. Humans are diverse in needs and requirements and managing them is an art. It is important to constantly stay connected to all the stakeholders (customers, employees, suppliers) to continuously update on the people skills.
Example; A salesperson turned team lead should also be in touch with the customer to have proper people skills otherwise it would be lost.
Finally, is it important for management to have people skills?
It is important for the management to have people skills since it needs to manage multiple stakeholders. In terms of negotiations, issue handling, motivation the key component that shapes is the people skills.
Example: Convincing the shareholders for the low dividend is a people skill. Secondly, motivating the workforce for extra work due to access demand is also a people skill.
