Formal groups are the ones in which the purpose of creation is professional. These would be created as per the regulation of the official authority. These are created in order to fulfil a particular objective. Informal groups are the ones in which the groups will not be formed under any strict regulations and these would be formed on the basis of the likes, attitudes as well as the interest of the employee.

Formal groups would be created for specific purposes whereas the informal group is created wuthout any specific goals.

  • The mode of formation if the formal groups are deliberate and the mode of informal group formation is voluntary
  • Size of the formal group is large whereas if the informal group is comparatively small.
  • Relationship in formal groups are professional whereas in informal groups as personal.
  • Communication in formal groups are concentrated on one direction whereas in the informal groups communications spread in all directions.
