Discussion: Skin Color is an Illusion
What to do:
Please watch the TED Talk Skin Color is an Illusion Links: https://www.ted.com/talks/nina_jablonski_breaks_the_illusion_of_skin_color. and also review the site Understanding Race Links:http://understandingrace.org/home.html. from the American Anthropological Association and post what you thought was the most interesting thing that you learned.
We differentiate people on the basis of our skin color. But instead of differentiating or discriminating if we would have used it to exemplify as the best evidence of our evolution, then the world would have been a different place. There would wouldn't have been so much of atrocities that have been committed in the name of racial discrimination. Charles Darwin, if he would not have rejected the idea that climate plays an important role in people's color, and if he would have studied this from the perspective of evolution, then he would have taught this and would have spread this idea. But his bias prevented him in doing so and knowing the truth.
Skin color is the best illustration of we evolved. Our ancestors who lived in Africa were dark colored. The people who lived near equators are dark colored, while at the poles are light skinned. Now, here nature plays it's role. The places near equator receive ample amount of sunrays that are loaded with ultraviolet rays. These UV rays are harmful to us because it destroys folates that are important for reproduction and other functions of the body necessary for sustenance. Also, we needed D rays or vitamin D that's present in the sunrays itself and there's no other better source for it. This D rays is essential for strong bones and better immune system. Nature found the solution for these problem in the pigment called melanin. This darkened the skin so that our folates are protected by the harmful UV rays, while we get vitamin D. Those people who moved out of equatorial regions to temperate regions lost this melanin so that they are able to receive vitamin D which was scarce as these regions received less sunrays. If we could propagate this truth of our skin color, then, we could have a better society and there would be peace, justice, equality and love all over.
