Nursing education is adopting e-learning and simulation experiences for the students. Two junior-level nursing students, Gene and Linda, are discussing the merits of this type of nursing-focused learning.
Pros and cons related to e-learning
e-learning is a method of learning process, in which learning takes place throuhg online mode using electronic device.
Advantages
It is flexible inrelation to time and place of learning process takes place
It promote wide range of knowledge aquicision by accessing large amount of learning resources
E- learning is cost effective .
E- learning creates additional plateform for learning through discussion between teacher and student as well as other group members.
A teacher can teach their students from anywhere in the world. As well for the studentsc an participate multi cultural and multilinguistic and multinational students for learning in a same plateform. so the students get wide experiences and sharing of knowledge take place.
E-learning heps to manage faculty deficiency, facilities, lab trainers.
E-learning allows self pacing. Programmed instruction methods are useful for flexible learning process.
It is useful during emergency or pandemic situations.
Disadvantages
Lack of interaction between student and teacher. Students pushed in to remoteness.
less effectieve for Clarifing doubt , explaining real situations, interpretations
periodic assessment and evaluation is difficult. students mislead the process, plagiarized .
E-learning increase social isolation among children. They will be more self confinement.
Spending more time with electronic device results, sress, eye problems and brain fatigue. Computer vision syndrome .
E-learning causes physical inactivity among learners.
Different types of simulations and its impact in nursing education
High fidelity and low fidelity simulators are available
high fidelity simulators:
High fidelity simulators can be used , when teaching close to real life situations In which clinical scenarios are programmed in the simulators. (Eg . when students are asking to check vital signs, and to take appropriate actions the simulators provide feed back. CPR simulators, Ventilaotrs). These simulators are more realistic, and have the outward appearance of reality and reacts in response.
Low fidelity simulators
Low fidelity simulators are hepful to teach students, when there is real life situations are least condusive for learning.( venipunture, breast palpation,). Thses may not give real feed back for the students.
Human simulation with standardised patients .
Here patient is act as an actor. According to the teaching learning objectives, patients are selected. This method is used for collecting history, teaching disease conditions, correlating with theory and literaure.Feedback is provided by the patient, if procedure done. Students get real information from the participants.
