if you could pass one law for the United States that would directly address climate change what would it be and why?
Reduce anthropogenic carbon emission as much as possible.
Green house effect
Green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide helps to keep the planet warm by maintaining an average temperature and allows the Steady growth of life within. . They form a covering in the earth’s atmosphere and trap the suns heat and useful radiations from escaping out making earth a warmer and sustainable place to live. This is called as greenhouse effect. However many natural and anthropogenic events have contributed to steady increase in amount of greenhouse gases. This have major disadvantage over the advantages. Burning of fossil fuel and other human inventions have rapidly contributed to the increasing rate of emission of greenhouse gases, which have dramatically lead to an increase in temperature causing major climate changes.
Consequences
Increased greenhouse gas emission can be a threat to humanity. It is even capable of wiping out life from the planet. It can cause alterd climatic conditions, rise in sea level, melting of glaciers causing floods and raise in temperature causing droughts, increasing chances for volcanic eruptions, oxygen depletion in the water, wild fires. So its high time we should focus into reduction of emission of these gases.
Preventive measures
Reduce individual use of fossil fuels: Instead of using individual cars promote public transportation. This can bring about use of fossil fuel and reduce carbon emission.
Promote recycling and reuse
Use of CFL instead of regular electric bulbs
Reduce the use of airconditioner and refrigerators
Switching off electric appliances when not required.
Reduce industrial emission
Depend on renewable sources of energy
Prevent deforestation and plant more trees.
Carbon tax can be implemented to reduce the emission
Creating awareness to the citizens about the ill effects of carbon emission
Implementing laws by the respective countries and as joint venture world wide to reduce emission to as low as possible.
