Question 8

  1. A study to determine whether treatment with a calcium channel block or an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor lowers the incidence of coronary heart disease when compared with a diuretic included over 33,000 patients (ALLHAT 2002). The primary outcome was fatal coronary heart disease or myocardial infarction.

What type of study design is this? Give a justification for your answer in your own words.

please may I have a brief explained answer

You can perform a One Way Anova in this regard...

The One Way Anova technique is generally used to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between the averages of two or more independent groups.

Here, out of the 33000 patients first of all select two sample of sample size more than 30. Simple Random sampling can be used in this regard, where every member will have the equal probability of being selected.

After this, assign one sample to the treatment with calcium and the other with normal treatment and later on based on their condition, assign a rating to each of them on a predetermined scale.

Later on, One Way Anova can be applied to check if there is any significant difference observed in the means of both the samples. If No, then it means that the treatment is not showing any effect.

Hypothesis:

H0: μ1 = μ2 (Null Hypothesis)

H1: Means are not all equal (Alternate Hypothesis)

Later on, you will come across a term called P value. Kindly note that If the confidence level taken in this case is 95%, then Alpha = 1 - 0.95 = 0.05

Alpha refers to significance level i.e. the probability of making a Type I error.

If the P value in this case is less than 0.05, then it means that there is a significant difference observed in the means of both the samples and in this case the null hypothesis is not accepted.

Later on, after analysing the data, if you found that the alternate hypothesis is accepted then it means that the means of both the groups are not equal. It means that there is a chance that the new treatment might or mightn't impact the patients. Later on Post Hoc test can be done to check which of the group has the highest impact and thus the result can be obtained...
