1. Determine if the alleged father can be the real father of the child. Answer True for Yes and False for No.

Mother is type A, child is type A, alleged father is type B

2.Diploid human cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes. The number of DNA molecules present in human cells during Metaphase of meiosis I and metaphase of mitosis is 92. True or False?

3.Determine whether the alleged father is the real father of the child. Answer True for Yes and False for No.

Mother is type O, child is type O, alleged father is type A

4.Determine if the alleged father can be the real father of the child. Answer True for Yes and False for No.

Mother is type AB, child is type AB, alleged father is type B

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. TRUE

Mother is type A, child is type A, the alleged father is type B

blood group is established by co-dominant alleles. If the mother is type A, there are two possible genotypes for mother - IAIA or IA Ii

The alleged father is type B, there are similarly two possible genotypes: IBIB or IB Ii But genotype of the real should father IB Ii because the child is type A. if father's genotype would have been IBIB, the child could be type B or type AB

Since the child is a type A. So, he must be having a genotype of IA Ii

2. TRUE

The number of chromosomes in the haploid state is 23 and diploid-46. so during meiosis, homologous recombination takes place paternal and maternal chromosomes and bivalent are formed. This formation of bivalent during meiosis leads to doubling up the number of chromosomes to 92 in metaphase of meiosis I.

In the case of mitosis, since there is no involvement of paternal and maternal chromosomes. so the number of chromosomes in prophase of mitosis is 46. but in mitosis, there is doubling of DNA from 2C during interphase of mitosis to 4C in prophase. During metaphase, chromosomes separate into sister chromatids and formation of 92 chromatids or 92 DNA molecules take place.

3. TRUE

Mother is type O, child is type O, alleged father is type A

If mother is type O, her genotype is Ii Ii and since child is also O, genotype of child is also Ii Ii

So, alleged father with type A can be the real father of type O child if genotype of father isIA Ii

4. TRUE

Mother is type AB, child is type AB, alleged father is type B

genotype of mother is IA IB

genotype of child is also IA IB

Alleged father can be real father if he has a genotype of IB IB
