Management is the administration of an organization, business, non-profit organization or government body. Principles of management is a broad and general guideline for managerial decision making and behavior of employee towards organization. They are underlying factor forming the foundation of successful management. These Principles are :

  1. Division of Work - It states that whole work is divided into small task. The specialization of workforce should be according to skill set of a person thereby increasing productivity and efficiency of work. Specialization also increases accuracy and speed.
  2. Authority and Responsibility - Authority means the right of a superior to give commands or order to his subordinates and responsibility means obligation for performance. Both authority and responsibility go together and they are the two sides of same coin and both are necessary to get things done.
  3. Discipline - It is pivotal for smooth functioning and is often seen as the oil to make engine of organization run smoothly. It is obedience, proper conduct in relation to others, respect of authority etc.
  4. Unity of Command - It means individual employee should receive order from one manager and answerable to that only. If it is not done then it leads to confusion and possible conflict. This principle helps in establishing the responsibility of mistakes.
  5. Unity of Direction - It states that all employees deliver the same activities can be linked to same objective. All related activities described in a plan of action must be carried by one group that forms a team. Manager is responsible for plan and monitor the program of defined and planned activities.\
  6. Subordination of Individual Interest to Mutual Interest - It states that management should put aside their personal consideration and put companies' objective first. The organizational goals' interest must be the primary focus and must prevail individuals' interest.
  7. Remuneration - The methods of remuneration payable must be fair and reasonable and rewarding the effort of employee as this is the chief motivation and influences productivity.
  8. Degree of Centralization - It means the centralization or concentration of the decision making authority should be with the top management and the amount of power wielded depends on the size of company.
  9. Scalar Chain / Line of Authority - It suggest that there should be a defined and clear hierarchy or line of authority from top management to lowest rank linking all manager at all level. It can be seen as management structure and each can contact superior in case of any contingency.
  10. Order - Order should be acceptable and under the rules of company. Social order ensures smooth operation through authoritative procedure. Employee must have the right to resource at their disposal to function properly.
  11. Equity - The employees should be treated kindly and equally to ensure a just workplace. Manager should be fair and impartial and give equal attention to all employees.
  12. Stability of Tenure of Personnel - This principle states that personnel, specially manager should not frequently enter and exit organization to minimize employee turnover.
  13. Initiative - It states that employees should be allowed to express new ideas. Interest and involvement of employee should be encouraged as it creates added value to company.
  14. Espirit de Corp / Team Spirit - It refers that managers should ensure and develop morale in workplace. Team Spirit help develop mutual trust and understanding among the team members and finish task on time.
