In nature , water does not remain in one place for a long time , it is always moving due to flow , evaporation , condensation , precipitation and percolation .
Surface water evaporates during heat and condenses as clouds in the sky , which in turn precipitates back to the earth surface.
After precipitation or usually rain , water flows on the surface as surface runoff ,a portion of which flows to a nearby water body ,some water percolates into the water table and the rest of it evaporates back into the atmosphere with time .
The water which percolates into the soil and fills the cracks and spaces between soil , gravel and sand ,storing themselves in an aquifer .The ground water is extracted through wells ,discharge into streams or lakes and sometimes brought naturally by springs .
Lakes can be made artificially and are naturally formed on the course of mature rivers , areas which have ongoing glaciation , rift zones and mountain areas.
The water which joins a waterbody like stream , river flows eventually to join a larger water body and to the sea at last.
The cycle of movement of water from the surface to the water bodies and back to the surface is called water cycle or hydrological cycle.
