Expert Solution

A: A hypothesis is defined as “a specific statement of prediction”. It describes in concrete terms what you can expect from a study. A single study might have many hypotheses. All studies will have two hypothesis, like to predict a relationship between two variable. One variable will describe your prediction and other will describe all possible outcomes. It helps to translate the research problems and objectives to a clear prediction or expectations of a study or defines the outcome of the research

A theory is formulated to explain, understand and predict phenomena. In many cases, it is used to challenge and extend existing knowledge within the limits of critical assumptions. A theoretical framework is what will hold or support the research study. A theory will define and explain why the research problem under study exists.

The difference between a concept and variable is as follows:

1.      The concept is mental images and highly subjective in nature.

·         The subjective images cannot be measured statistically.

·         The subjective impressions will differ from person to person.

·         The concept has to be converted into variables to make them measurable.

·         Example: measurement of the wealth of a person will have to convert to a measurable variable like his monthly income, his assets, his liabilities etc.

·         Another example a psychologist will like to measure the effectiveness of his treatment. He can measure it by analyzing the reduction in a number of off days from work, reduced visits to the psychologist office etc.

2.      Variable are also mental images but can be measured both subjectively and objectively.

·         The variables can be measured using various scales.

·         The variables can be measured objectively

·         The variables can be defined as independent variables and dependent variables.

·         The variables can be defined as extraneous variables and intervening variable.

·         Example: you can measure the income of a person and decide his net worth.

Q: state the attribute of the good research topic and how do you verify them? state any two technique for each of rational thinking and critical thinking to generate research idea?

A:

Research is defined as a process of collecting, interpreting and analyzing information to solve a problem”. To be called a good research the process must have certain characteristics and properties. The research should be systematic, controllable, rigorous, valid, verifiable, quantifiable and based on empirical data.

The attributes of a good research topic are as follows:

·         It is based on others work

·         It is executable

·         It is based on a rational and linked to a theory

·         It leads to more questions

·         It directly or indirectly addresses some real-world theories or question

·         The researcher is sincerely interested in the research

·         The information is valid and verifiable

·         It states the variables or constructs to be studied.

Two techniques of rational thinking to generate research ideas are as follows:

·         Brainstorming: It involves generating many solutions to a problem by generating ideas from a wide audience.

·         Roleplaying: Each person can take on a different role and enact it. This is a creative and interesting way to generate new ideas. It reduces inhibitions and generates many new creative ideas.

Two techniques of critical thinking to generate research ideas are as follows:

·         Analyzing: Analyzing means breaking a topic into many subparts to determine their nature and relationship.

·         Information seeking: It involves searching for evidence, data, facts or knowledge from relevant sources.
