A 44.0 kg body is moving in the direction of the positive x-axis with a speed of 373 m/s when owing to an internal explosion, it breaks into three pieces. One part, whose mass is 6.5kg, moves away from the point of explosion with a speed of 438 m/s along the positive y-axis. A second fragment, whose mass is 5.0 kg, moves away from the point of explosion with a speed of 378 m/s along the negative x-axis.

What is the speed of the third fragment? Ignore effects due to gravity.

How much energy was released in the explosion?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Before explosion

Given Mass of Main body , M = 44 kg

initial velocity of Main body , U = 373m/s in x direction

After explosion

Mass of body 1 ,m1 = 6.5kg

Final velocity of body1 ,v1 = 438 m/s in y direction(v1y)

Mass of body 2 ,m2 = 5 kg

Final velocity of body2 ,v2 = 378 m/s in -ve x direction (v2x)

Mass of body 3 ,m3 = 32.5kg

Final velocity of body3 ,v3 = ?
