Correlation is necessary in the sense it helps in validating the relations, association, and connection between tow distinct factors or variables. Once the relationship or correlation is established or considered as applicable, then further study in causation can be done. It is not sufficient for causation because it only talks about some association but it does nor specifically highlight the 'cause and effect'. It cannot precisely say that variable A is effecting variable B. There can be a chance that Variable C is effecting Variable B.
For instance,
There is a positive correlation/relationship between sugar consumption and weight gain. It has been found out that weight gain in individuals is attributed/related to high sugar intake. But only sugar consumption/intake is causing or resulting in weight gain- that is debatable.
The further causal study found out that individuals who are not having high sugar intake also gain weight but due to genetic hormonal imbalance.
