What points might you include in your presentation? 1. Give an introduction into what out of care home means: Definition, types (foster/kinship/adoption/lead tenant/residential care).

2. Talk about child development- importance of having a stable, loving and secure family setting, molding of children, learning appropriate attitudes and behaviours with a development of morality and conscience. Explain the following stages in the various developmental theories

  • Brofenbrenner's Ecological theory of development : Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem
  • Erik Erkishon's stages of development: Trust vs Mistrust, Autonomy vs Shame, Initiative vs Guilt, Industry vs Inferiority & Identity vs Role Confusion
  • Khollberg stages of morality: 6 stages

3. Give the statistics and prevalence of exploitation (physical & emotional) and child sexual abuse cases that occur in out of care homes. 2.7% increase (67,400) students suffered from child sexual abuse or malpractices in a national survey conducted in USA between 2013-2017.

4. Most students do not receive the adequate care, support and necessary needs that are required for an adequate upbringing. This leads to the occurrence of conduct and behavioral issues (argument, fights, stealing, theft, mugging etc), peer influence leading to joining gangs, violent groups, alcohol & drug abuse, increase in risk taking behaviors.- Give statistics for each of these issues.

5. Children don't end up receiving adequate educational support and there is a higher drop out rates. Talk about effects on the educational and career developmental.

6. Longer time spent in such homes the effects it has on interpersonal relationships, behavioral issues, poor future aspirations, involvement in wrong crowds, high chances of getting into issues with the law etc.

7. So far these were the negatives, if future parents want to foster or adopt children talk about the good impact they would do in providing these children with a good home. Need for good parenting and safe homes.
