1- Theories of arousal and performance
2- The stress process
3- How arousal, stress, and anxiety affect performance
Psychology of sport
Theories of arousal say different things about relation between arousal and performance in a sports event. One of these theory says that there exists a linear relationship between arousal and performance in a sports event. This is known as drive reduction theory.
State of arousal ensures increased blood flow. It also causes more physical activities. This creates a change in hormonal level. There is another theory with the name of "Inverted-U function" theory. It says that arousal may cause improved performance only up to a certain extent.
A point may come after which this level of performance may show a declining trend. There is another perspective of "optimal arousal". It says that there remains a need of appropriate amount of arousal so that maximum efficiency in sports activities can be ensured.
When we do not meet the desired criteria of performance then people start comparing our performance with others. It may create a stress factor. Stress in optimum amount can increase our performance because it will motivate us to perform better and better.
If Stress crosses the line or it goes beyond a fix point then it may ruin or cause decline in overall performance. If stress increases our performance level then it is being called as positive stress. If it causes decline in performance then it is called as negative stress.
Anxiety causes a sense of worry. It also increases level of nervousness in a person. This may activate the nervous system and we may become motivated for better performance. Surrounding environmental conditions play an important role in arousal of feelings of stress and anxiety which may increase our performance if we control those feelings to an optimum level.
If stress and anxiety goes beyond an appropriate level then it may cause a decrease in overall performance.
