In which process(es) are electron carriers reduced? options:
Both Lactic acid fermentation and Citric acid cycle
Neither Lactic acid fermentation nor Citric acid cycle
Citric acid cycle in mitochondria
Lactic acid fermentation
Answer:-
The correct option is third one i.e Citric acid cycle in
mitochondria. If we talk about Lactic acid fermentation, this
process takes place in microorganisms and in some cells of the
muscle. In this process, NADH is the electron carrier which gets
oxidized into NAD+ in order to produce energy in the form of ATP
through glycolysis in lower oxygen conditions and pyruvate gets
reduced into lactic acid or lactate by NADH and the muscle soreness
is due to the lactic acid when it starts accumulated in muscles of
the body whereas, citric acid cycle have NADH and
as electron carriers. Three NAD+ molecules reduced into NADH and
one FAD molecule reduced into FADH2. These electron carriers are
produced from reduction-oxidation reactions in citric acid cycle.
For instance, When citric acid cycle consumes acetyl CoA and
which results in the reduction of NAD+ into NADH and production of
CO2 as a byproduct. The electrons from this NADH is later used in
electron transport chain.
