Coronaviruses (CoV) is a novel family of viruses that have not been discovered by humans earlier. It can result in illness ranging from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV) which can be fatal.

The newly discovered family has been revealed to be zoo tonic, that it can be transmitted from animals to people. The illness has an outbreak in the Wuhan, Hubei Province, of China. The country has been linked to a large variety of seafood and live markets, which can suggest the spread of the illness from animals to humans.

Moreover, person to person spread has been found in China and other countries, including the United States.

The symptoms of the illness can range from mild symptoms to severe outcomes and death. After exposure, an individual can feel fever, shortness of breath, and cough after 2 to 14 days from the exposure of the virus.

Information so far revealed that the illness is mild, however, severe illness cases have been observed in China (about 16%). Older people and people with various diseases such as heart diseases, asthmatic conditions, etc are more susceptible to this new strain of viruses.

Precautions that can be taken by individuals to prevent the illness are-

  • Avoiding close contact people with people who are sick may help.
  • Washing hands for 20 seconds may control the spread of the viruses.
  • Moreover, avoid touching the mouth, nose, and eyes can help.
  • Disinfecting and sanitizing objects can help prevent the spread among people

The outbreak of these viruses is of utmost importance due to its ability to spread from person to person. Travel history, especially individuals returning from affected locations, plays a crucial role in the development of these viruses. The risk to the general public depends on how well viruses spread, the medical or other precautions taken to control the impact, and the severity of the illness.
