"cold packs" used to treat sports injuries commonly consist of two compartments; water or some kind of gel on one side and solid ammonium nitrate, NH4NO3, on the other. The chemical equation corresponding to the dissociation reaction that occurs when you break the seal between the compartments is given below: NH4NO3(s)-->NH4+(aq)+NO3(aq) A. Given that the cold packs get colder, is the above reaction exo-,endo-, or isothermic? Provide the definition of the appropraite word and apply the concepts of system and surroundings to this particular situation. Be as concise as possible.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Cold pack, which usually contains water and a packet of ammonium nitrate. The cold pack is activated by breaking the barrier separating the water and ammonium chloride, allowing them to mix. Then the cold packs get colder in reference to room temperature, and the above reaction is an endothermic reaction.

EXPLANATION

Definition of an endothermic reaction is, a reaction which absorbs energy in the form of heat from its surrounding.

when ammonium nitrate mix with water, due to random motion(entropy) of the solid particles, it separates and causes ionization of ammonium nitrate. but the interaction(attractive force) between the solid particle and water molecule is a weaker one, which produces a small amount of energy(heat) for ionization. Hence this endothermic reaction takes heat from its surrounding(water) and lowers the temperature of water. This result cold packs to get colder .

nstant cold packs sometimes used to treat athletic injuries contain solid ammonium nitrate and liquid water separatedbya thin divider. When the divider is broken, the ammonium nitrate dissolves endothermically: NH4NO3(s) NH4+(aq) + NO3–(aq) To measure the enthalpy of this reaction, you dissolve 1.25 g of ammonium nitrate in enough water to make 25.0 mL of solution. Chemical cold packs contain two separate compartments: one contains water and the other contains NH4NO3 (ammonium nitrate). When the contents of the two compartments combine, the temperature drops to approximately 0°C. A) Is the solvation process exothermic or endothermic? What does that tell us about the sign of DH? B) Is the solvation reaction spontaneous? What does that mean about the sign of DG? C) Since DG = DH - TDS, what do we know about the sign of DS?

Instant cold packs, often used to ice athletic injuries on the field, contain ammonium nitrate and water separated by a thin plastic divider. When the divider is broken, the ammonium nitrate dissolves according to the following endothermic reaction: NH4NO3(s)→NH+4(aq)+NO−3(aq) In order to measure the enthalpy change for this reaction, 1.50 g of ammonium nitrate is dissolved in enough water to make 30.0 mL of solution. The initial temperature is 23.7 ∘C and the final temperature (after the solid dissolves) is...

1. Have you ever used an instant cold pack?. It actually contains two compartments: one has water and the other contained ammonium nitrate solid. When you squeeze, the water bag breaks and ammonia nitrate solid dissolves in water liquid. The following equation depicts the thermochemical process of dissolving ammonia nitrate in water. NH4NO3 (s) + H2O → NH4+(aq) + NO3-(aq)      DH = +27.5 kJ/mole. Let’s assume the pack contains about 100g of water and 30.0 gram of NH4NO3 solid....

Ribavirin is an antiviral drug commonly used to treat viral infections such as hepatitis C and the highly lethal Hantavirus, Ebola, and Marburg infections. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, it was also tested in SARS-CoV patients. Ribavirin is a nucleoside inhibitor, or more specifically a ribosyl purine analog. Based on the biochemical principle of the drug alone, would you think ribavirin would be useful to treat dengue and herpesvirus infections?

Most sports injuries are immediate and obvious, like a broken leg. However, some can be more subtle, like the neurological damage that may occur when soccer players repeatedly head a soccer ball. To examine effects of repeated heading, McAllister et al. (2013) examined a group of football and ice hockey players and a group of athletes in noncontact sports before and shortly after the season. The dependent variable was performance on a conceptual thinking task. Following are hypothetical data from...
