1. Some of the core symptoms which are associated with the major depression or the major depressive disorder are

  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Fatigue
  • Change in apetite
  • Loss/gain in weight
  • Recurrent suicidal thoughts
  • Loss of inetrest/pleasure
  • Depressed mood

2. People who suffer from depression show chnages in the glucocorticoid levels because of a disordered HPA axis glucocorticoid feedback mechanism. An increased levels of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol is seen in almost 50% of patients who suffer from depression. The GR function is imapired in depression which causes changes in the levels of glucocorticoid.

3. In a depressed brain, the imapired GR funtions and the abnormalities in the cortisol levels result in various changes such as memory acquisition or neuronal survival etc. The memory acquisition is regulated by cortisol, and a no. of abnormalities are noticed in cortisol levels in a depressed brain.

4. The answer to whether glucocorticoid level show similar changes in aytpical depression would be no. People who suffer from atypical depression do not exhibit elevated levels basal corticol instead, show increased HPA sensitivity to glucocorticoid feedback and also exhibit HPA hypoactivity.
