Researchers in mental health fields are often interested in evaluating the effectiveness of using food images to enhance positive mood. Adapting a typical design from such studies, suppose we have participants rate their mood change on a standard self-report affect scale after viewing images of "comfort" foods, fruits/vegetables (F/V), and random non-food images (used as a control group). The results are given in the table at right for this hypothetical study.

Researchers were interested in the relationship between mental health and living with a pet. Students were surveyed and grouped by pet type as either “Cats”, “Dogs”, or “No Pets”, and completed a scale on depressive symptoms on a scale of 1-7, where 7 indicates high levels of depressive symptoms. Using the data in the frequency table below, please conduct a one-way ANOVA to determine if there are any significant differences between these groups. Use α = .05, report η², and...

Researchers are interested in the effectiveness of methadone in patients with chronic pain syndromes. The researchers used a scale (0-100, higher numbers indicate higher pain) for maximum pain intensity over the course of the day. Each subject took a 20mg dose of methadone for 5 days, and then took a placebo for 5 days. The following table gives the mean maximum pain intensity scores for the 5 days on methadone and the 5 days on placebo. Do these data provide...

Question 1 Researchers are interested in testing the effectiveness of a new immunosuppressive therapy to be used post-transplant to reduce graft failure in the host. Suppose researchers investigating this new therapy are concerned about the dangerous side-effects of the drug. For instance, participants that would like to enroll in the study are not allowed to already have diabetes, as the immunosuppressive agent has been found to drastically increase fasting glucose levels, which could be very dangerous for diabetics. This means,...
