What are some recommended methods for counseling clients of African descent? Why are these methods considered successful?
Individuals of African descent are also referred to as African Americans. They are people who have lived in the states for at least one generation. Clients from African descent are prone to mental illness more than Americans. Exposure to the environment in the continent of Africa within the neighborhood which includes violence, poverty and etcetera has traumatic mental effects on individuals and families. It is important that a counselor adopts methods that would be helpful in the process of counseling with clients of African descent. One of the recommended methods is strength training. Strength training includes focusing on the positives of the African community. Individuals of the African descent are known for their close knit bonds and relations. They celebrate their culture in the most magnificent way. A counselor could adapt the cultural values of the community while counseling or treating clients. They also emphasize on familial bonds. Emotional support from family may be endorsed and encouraged as a method of counseling. These methods are considered to be successful because they very pertinent to the Africans which comfort them and help them in the process of counseling.
